Vice Chair Introduction: Himaja Jangle


Hi, my name is Himaja Jangle and I am extremely excited to be serving as your Vice Chair for the Interpol this year! 

I am currently a fourth year Economics major at Berkeley and have been part of BMUN for 7 years now. Being from the Bay, I thoroughly enjoyed attending BMUN as a delegate in high school and was super excited when I got the opportunity to join BMUN and serve as part of the Secretariat in college. 

Outside of BMUN, I am involved in Project Smile, a mentoring organization with a local middle school as well as Voyager Consulting. When I’m not studying or participating in my extra-curriculars, you can usually catch me enjoying boba or any of Berkeley’s amazing food with my friends.

Soccer Player Imprisoned on Red Notice

It seems that countries love to use red notices on athletes. Remember the red notice issued against NBA player Enes Kanter? Well now, Bahrain has issued a red notice against Hakeem al-Araibi, a defender for the Australia's Pascoe Vale Football Club. Imprisoned for over two months in Bangkok after being arrested during his honeymoon, al-Araibi has now been released. The red notice against al-Araibi was first issued by Bahrain, on accounts that the soccer player had been convicted and sentenced in abstentia on accounts of "terrorism-related offenses." The Bahraini government has also been cited by Human Rights Watch as having a zero-tolerance policy towards political dissidents and free media. It's possible that al-Araibi has spoken out against the government, considering that he resides in Australia under refugee status. The structure of Interpol can be quite confusing, especially considering how many committees and bodies operate under it as a whole. We want to ensure that you are all as prepped as possible in understanding the way in which Interpol functions, which you can learn about  here ! This article touches upon Interpol's abilities, specifically in regards to coordinating investigations and making arrests. Pay specific attention to the case study mentioned about Meng Hongwei, and how his disappearance showcases the strengths and weaknesses that lie within Interpol as a body.
