Topic Post 1: Red Notice Abuse

In the weeks leading up to the conference, we, the Interpol dais, will be posting relevant articles and informative pieces relating to our two topics. If you would like us to explore a particular area within one of the two topics, send us an email about it and we will try our best to find a supporting article! Today, we'd like to share The Scourge of the Red Notice , a report that was published by Foreign Policy last December. The case study which it uses to introduce the topic is of Pancho Campo, a Spanish event organizer and former Olympian. Campo was detained in the United States after a Red Notice was issued against him by the United Arab Emirates, who the author alleges "uses [Interpol] as its private international debt collection agency". This article does a great job of summarizing the current scope of the issue, describing some of the key players, and analyzing the effectiveness of Interpol's past reforms. We highly recommend you give it a quick read, and see

Regarding "Past and Current Actions"

We wanted to clarify some of the expectations surrounding the "Past and Current Actions" section in your position papers, particularly for the Red Notice Abuse topic. As this is a niche topic, formal resolutions regarding the topic are few and far between. Because of this, we suggest looking to news agencies and other non-resolution material for insight on your countries position on the topic. Also, we recognize that this section may be difficult to write, and will take this into account when grading. If you feel stuck or are having trouble finding research materials, please feel free to email us at icpolvxii@bmun.org and we'll try to help!
Hello! My name is Jessica, and I'm a junior studying math! I have been in BMUN since my freshman year. In my spare time, I volunteer at the Berkeley Free Clinic, where we provide health care services to those in need. I'm very excited to see you all in committee!

Head Chair Introduction: Nikhil Pimpalkhare

Image
Hello! My name is Nikhil, and I will be your head chair for the International Criminal Police Organization this year! I am so incredibly excited for conference, and hope that you are too! I got involved in Model United Nations way back in 2013. MUN was my most impactful extracurricular throughout high school, and the personal and professional growth I experienced inspired me to continue the activity in college! A bit about me - I am a current sophomore at UC Berkeley majoring in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Outside of BMUN, I am a course tutor for one of the lower division CS classes at Cal. Every week, I teach a one hour class to around 5 fellow students, lead a meeting for first-time tutors to go over the current week's content, and help to design worksheets and other review materials. In my free time, I like to ski, hang out with friends, and play Smash Ultimate. I can't wait to meet you all in person! Enjoy my goofy pictures.

Vice Chair Introduction: Cassidy Chansirik

Hi everyone! My name is Cassidy Chansirik and I will be one of your vice chairs for ICPO! I am a first year hoping to major in Legal Studies and am currently pursuing a minor in Education. This is my fifth year in MUN, so I definitely know what it's like to be a delegate (positions papers and all!). I am currently a mentor to a sixth grader at Willard Middle School through the Youth Support Program and am also a research assistant in the Design for Equity Lab, which focuses on researching pedagogies to improve instructor teaching and student achievement. As you can see, I really love education, and hope to go into public policy with a concentration in education. Both inside and outside of school, I'm a huge foodie. I am constantly snapchatting food and looking up new places to try on Yelp. So, if you ever need recommendations, just let me know! I also love to travel, and just went to Thailand over winter break, where I got to meet an elephant and take a cooking class! Exc

Vice Chair Introduction: Himaja Jangle

Image
Hi, my name is Himaja Jangle and I am extremely excited to be serving as your Vice Chair for the Interpol this year!  I am currently a fourth year Economics major at Berkeley and have been part of BMUN for 7 years now. Being from the Bay, I thoroughly enjoyed attending BMUN as a delegate in high school and was super excited when I got the opportunity to join BMUN and serve as part of the Secretariat in college.  Outside of BMUN, I am involved in Project Smile, a mentoring organization with a local middle school as well as Voyager Consulting. When I’m not studying or participating in my extra-curriculars, you can usually catch me enjoying boba or any of Berkeley’s amazing food with my friends.    Hope you guys are as excited for conference as I am, and good luck!
